“Free trial” is doing too many jobs. On one checkout it means $0 and no payment details. On another it means $0 now, followed by a long subscription unless you cancel. Elsewhere it means paying the full plan price and asking for it back later. Start with the cash flow, not the label.

VPN free trial comparison: what each offer actually is

This table compares the current public route for each provider, not a ranking. A row can include more than one route because a desktop download, mobile store subscription, and direct website purchase may create different obligations. Provider names open our full paid reviews; the checked date links to the official source controlling the offer.

Offer availability can vary by account, country, platform, plan, payment method, and prior purchase history. A payment method is not necessarily a credit card: it may be PayPal, Apple Pay, or a store billing method. The table reports the current public route we could verify, not guaranteed eligibility for every visitor.

Two documentation conflicts remain visible. NordVPN’s current checkout-facing pages advertise a seven-day website trial, while an older support article still says website purchases have no trial. CyberGhost’s dedicated trial page advertises real $0 trials, while its guarantee page says it has no free trial and calls the paid guarantee a trial period. We use the dedicated offer page for current trial availability and keep the full-price guarantee separate.

Five cash-flow models

A free trial and a money-back guarantee are not the same

The useful question is not “Can I try it?” Every option below lets someone evaluate a VPN. The useful questions are what leaves the account today, what happens automatically, and whether getting money back requires another action.

A no-card trial minimizes billing exposure but may be short. A free plan avoids a deadline but does not necessarily expose every paid feature. A money-back guarantee gives more testing time, yet it ties up the full payment and creates a separate refund task. None of those trade-offs becomes “best” in isolation.

$0 is only the first line

Which VPN trials charge $0 today?

The current website trials we verified for NordVPN and Surfshark show $0 during the seven-day trial, but both require an eligible payment method and convert to the selected long-term plan unless canceled. PIA’s seven-day trial and CyberGhost’s mobile trials use store billing. CyberGhost’s desktop trial is the exception here because its public page says no card is required.

The post-trial amount matters more than the monthly-equivalent headline. NordVPN says the selected one- or two-year plan will be charged. Surfshark says the selected 12- or 24-month plan will be charged. The full total can vary by plan, promotion, country, currency, and tax, so save the checkout showing your own amount.

We also opened a public Surfshark checkout without activating the trial. The selected One+ offer showed a $0.00 order total, then $121.23 for 27 months after the trial, with later renewal language. That is useful checkout evidence, but it is one August 2026 offer rather than a universal Surfshark price.

A genuine no-payment route

CyberGhost has the clearest no-card desktop trial in this comparison

CyberGhost’s current dedicated trial page advertises 24 hours on Windows and macOS with no credit card required. It says to download the app and create the trial account. Because the window is short, this route is better suited to a prepared checklist than to casual testing spread across several days.

The mobile offers are different products: three days on Android and seven days on iOS, both obtained through their respective stores with a payment method. “CyberGhost has a no-card trial” is therefore true for the checked desktop route, not a blanket description of every platform.

Small charge, different risk

Paid trials can be useful, but they are not free

PureVPN currently charges $0.99 for a seven-day Standard trial or $1.99 for Max. The checked page says Standard then charges $47.95 for 12 months and Max charges $89.95 for 12 months unless canceled. Its refund policy separately states that trial-based renewals are non-refundable. That makes the cancellation cutoff materially more important than the small entry price.

VPN.ac takes a different approach: its one-week trial costs $2 and allows three simultaneous connections. Its public terms provide a seven-day refund window, while support told us the trial does not auto-renew. A small trial price can therefore lead either to a larger automatic charge or to a simple expiry. Read the next event, not just the first number.

Follow the receipt

Website, App Store, and Google Play purchases follow different paths

The billing owner is the company or platform that created the subscription and appears on the receipt. It often controls cancellation and may control the refund decision. Installing a provider’s app does not prove the provider billed you directly.

Apple explains how to cancel an App Store subscription and request an Apple refund. Google publishes separate instructions for canceling a Google Play subscription and requesting a Google Play refund. Eligibility is not automatic merely because a request form exists.

Two different tasks

Canceling renewal is not the same as requesting a refund

Turning off auto-renewal prevents a future charge. It does not necessarily reverse a charge that already happened. Several support interactions in our paid review cycle explicitly treated cancellation and refund as separate requests.

Canceling early does not always preserve access until the original trial end. Some services keep access, some end it, and app-store behavior can differ. Treat the post-cancellation screen as evidence, not an assumption.

Nine paid workflows, final financial outcome

We requested nine VPN refunds: what happened

Every payment was returned in full. Six were recorded as received on the request date, PrivateVPN and Surfshark arrived on the next calendar date, and Turbo VPN arrived seven calendar days after the request. These are historical observations from our payment methods and accounts, not a promise about another customer’s eligibility or bank timing.

Calendar lag is the difference between the request date and the date receipt was confirmed. It is not an hour-level processing measurement. PIX is Brazil’s instant-payment system; PayPal and PIX results should not be treated as card or bank-transfer estimates.

Four separate events

Approval time and money-received time answer different questions

Support saying “approved” is encouraging. Your payment account saying “received” is the finish line. A useful refund record keeps these events separate:

1. Refund requested: the customer submits the request through the correct provider or store route.
2. Refund approved or processing starts: the provider or platform accepts the request, or says it has begun processing.
3. Premium access changes: access may end immediately, continue briefly, or remain until another point.
4. Money reaches the payment method: the full or partial amount appears in the original payment account.

VPN.ac is the cleanest example of why the final event matters. We did not preserve a written approval before the account became inaccessible, but the full PayPal payment returned on the request date. The outcome is financially confirmed without inventing an approval message that never arrived.

Surfshark shows a different evidence boundary. It still appeared active in our immediate post-approval check; our final record later marked the paid access as ended. We can report both observations, but we cannot manufacture the exact minute at which access changed.

• Run the kill-switch interruption test that matches your operating system.
• Verify both routes when using VPN split tunneling.
• Check which VPN protocols are actually available in your app.
• Test the streaming services and live workflows that matter to you; do not assume one server proves permanent access.
• Run IP, DNS, and WebRTC checks using the boundaries in our VPN testing methodology.
• Confirm any required port forwarding or dedicated IP before the deadline.
• Ask support one factual question if the current documentation leaves a buying-risk gap.

Why two customers can see different outcomes

Common reasons a VPN refund path changes

• Initial purchase vs. renewal: a first purchase may qualify while a recurring charge does not.
• Prior trial or refund: one-time eligibility can disappear after earlier use.
• Direct vs. store purchase: the billing owner and request form can change completely.
• Selected plan: monthly and longer terms can use different guarantee windows.
• Add-ons: dedicated IP, identity tools, phone numbers, or other extras may have separate rules.
• Payment method: cards, PayPal, PIX, cryptocurrency, cash, and store credit do not settle alike.
• Reason or troubleshooting: some providers require context or a support attempt.
• Region and law: local consumer rights and store terms can add or change remedies.

This list describes factors found in current terms and support routes. It does not claim that each factor caused a delay in our nine workflows.

What this evidence can and cannot prove

Limits of our comparison

Our nine refund outcomes came from real paid consumer workflows completed between May and July 2026. They do not represent every current $0 trial, app-store route, country, payment method, plan, add-on, or account history. We rechecked current public offers separately on August 12, 2026 and label checkout observations separately from activated trials.

We recorded the final receipt date for all nine payments, but we do not have an exact funds-received timestamp for every row. That is why the dataset uses calendar days rather than pretending to measure universal processing speed in hours. Payment processors and banks can add time after a provider acts.

The methodology became more detailed as the first review cycle progressed, so support timing and access-status checks are not identical to the minute across every provider. The purchase, request, and final receipt records are genuine. A larger budget and a second trial cycle could produce more repeated checks across every store and region, but the existing paid work remains substantial and useful within its stated scope.

All nine full refunds are a strong historical result, not a guarantee that another request will qualify or arrive within seven days. We do not publish private banking screenshots, order numbers, transaction IDs, account identifiers, support tickets, or payment details.

Choose the offer whose cash flow you can explain in one sentence

The lowest-friction trial is the one where you can state what leaves your account today, what will be charged next, when it happens, and who can stop or reverse it. Save that screen before you subscribe. If you use a money-back guarantee, the process is not finished when support says “approved”; it is finished when the money is back.
